12.02.2010 ...and the beat goes on...
Not much of an update this. Just to reassure you that comic work continues, and we will be making an appearance at Amecon in August, and the MCM London Expo in October. The (now long-term) project of Fine Feathered Friends continues, a does space hippies. The beat does indeed go on.
Oh and remember: if you see a squirrel looking puzzelled. Don't assume it's dazzed. It might just be in a state of contemplation over the storyline of the comic book it's just read...
09.01.2010 A new decade begins...
With the turning of the sands of time to begin another yer and another decade, a sudden realisation whilst under a tree, full-moon and during a new year snowfall that I am one of the few lucky enough to be creating comics. Admittedly not in the same scale as Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, Veritgo, etc. but comics none-the-less.
Just a nice comforting thought, when remembering an 10 year old version of myself making such a statement to my friends at the time that I wanted to do just that. And here I am.
Funny how the extremely rare occurance of the whole of the UK turning into a winter wonderland during the xmas/new year period (and beyond) can bring out the reflective side in an artist.
Happy 2010 Everyone
~ Marcus ~
19.12.2009 Merry Xmas everyone!
With the year drawing to a close, we at Squirrelworks wish you all a very merry xmas and a great new year.
17.10.2009 You can't stop the Squirrelworks... The Squirrelworks will go on...
Late post London MCM Expo update. After a studio name change (no your eyes do not decieve you, that really is a squirrel reading a comic book as our mascot) we headed out to the London Expo. Despite the challenging conditions, we had quite a successful sortee, with Space Hippies: Lost in Space, Space Hippies: Cold War, Dogs of War: Side A, Dogs of War: Side B and GT City #1 all now out of stock!
Work aside it was great to see sucha mix of 'cosplayers' from genres ranging from sci-fi, tv shows, and anime/manga, as well as video games. Sadly I didn't take that many pics as i'd intended, as we were there to, well, 'work' (kinda), but did get some odd random pics - Which will be up in our new 'On the Road' section
Highlights of the 2-day event:
- The facial expressions of pretty much everyone they wanderd past our table.
As well as the unbelieving/bewildered stares from afar as they saw the banner, typically followed by "Yes I thought it was a squirrel. And it is reading!", when they get nearer.
- Meeting Ben Templesmith. Who was seated only two rows back from our table...so actually (and more accurately) it was repeatedly getting Been Templesmith to sign things for a dear friend of mine.
But he is an amazing artist, and a very, very nice person.
Even remembered my name... tho i think the long scary coat kinda helps in that respect...
Those not familiar wiht his work may like to be introduced via the 30 Days of Night comic books (or the movie, as it pretty much captures his style/feel).
Also visit his website: http://www.templesmith.com/faze3/
- The other main highlight must have been finally finding a place to commission fantasy weapons and cosplay outfits, etc (mwahahahahahaaa... *ahem* - Marc). And bolting from the table the moment I saw someone carrying a Soul Calibur 4 variation of the Soul Edge sword.
-
Getting to meet loads of budding new artists, who were actually listened to what iwas saying about how to get into doing comics, etc. It still feels weird giving advice to others, but I guess as I am now one of the people on the other side of the table it's official...I do comics.
Still, I do feel quite honoured that they would consider asking talking to me about such things... I think the long scary coat helps in that respect too...
- Meeting a cosplayer as the necromancer 'Eve' from Guid Wars!
- Finding a foot-and-a-half-high Godzilla figure...which i subsequently could not afford!
- Spotting Old Bill from Left 4 Dead heading back home on the DLR after a weary day at the Expo!!!
17.10.2009 London Calling...
Only a few days to go untl the London MCM Expo (24th and 25th October), and still much to sort out. Despite my best efforts, Fine Feathered Friends still is not finished, and so (much to my depest regrets - MH) will not be making an appearance at the Expo.
Apologies to those looking forward to this, but I feel that rushing it would only give me a sense of disappointment about it, as i'm bound to see ways in which it could have been bettered.
In the mean time... See you at the London Expo October 2009!
13.9.2009 Countdown to Expo...
With the days growing short, and the warmth fading from our lands, we raise a mug of hot chocolate to the winter gods of old...
...And in other news (which actually makes sense) Fine Feathered Friends is one step closer to completion. Yes even now the (pigeon-obsessed - Skirmish) Marcus (not so! - Marcus) is scribbling away with the goal of getting it ready it time for the London MCM Expo on the 24th and 25th October 2009.
Because of this, GT City #2 is still on hold, but keep an eye on the Creative Works section for updates on this as well, as other comics in planning and production. In the meantime true belivers...
Stay Creative!
23.8.2009 A Post Ayacon world...
After a great time at Aya (and a subsequent week wishing we were still at Ayacon - darn you back-to-the-norm blues!), we once more settle down to the art of getting things that are not finished, finished, and the continuation of planning for things that will one day be finished...er...yes...
A few pics from the event will be up soon, but apologies in advance for the qualty as someone [ok...me - MH] left their digital camera at home.
Stay Creative!
21.7.2009 Long, long, overdue return.
Ok guys. The story so far:..
Comic work 0 : Life: 1 gazillion and 1...
Yep. On the plus side, we have been working on a new Space Hippies issue (on sale at Ayacon 2009).
Sadly new titles 'Fine Feathered Friends' and 'GT City #2' are both delayed and so won't be making an appearance at the con.
I am personally quite disappointed by that, but sometimes you've just gotta play the cards you're dealt.
The Studio has suffered something of a hybernation over many months, with various changes, etc. so a big apology to those of you who have enjoyed our comics so far, and have been looking forward to more. But with things slowly but surely clicking back into place, we'll be back on the comic train once more. So please stay tuned as more updates are sure to follow.
Oh and in case you didn't notice... we have a new site! Online purchasing is stil temporarily suspended, but will be up and running soon. In the meantime...Be excellent to each other.
See you at Ayacon 2009!
